Cape Horn in a John Welsford-designed SCAMP
Posted by Classic Boat Supplies on 11th Sep 2016
Veteran adventure sailor and Classic Boat Supplies customer Howard Rice (Michigan, USA), along with the team at Below 40 South, are embarking on a film-making project to record Howard's rounding of Cape Horn in a modified John Welsford-designed SCAMP.
The SCAMP is an 11' 11" micro-cruiser originally designed by Welsford and developed by the Small Craft Advisor Magazine Project (hence the acronym SCAMP). Christened the Southern Cross, Howard's vessel has received many modifications to make her more suited to the challenge and tests ahead. As we write Howard is living aboard Southern Cross on Lake Michigan for a month to test all systems and to ready himself for the journey in the 2016 southern hemisphere summer.
John Welsford himself will be operating one of the Go-Pro cameras for this film by Lutra Productions.
Classic Boat Supplies is proud to be a Gold Sponsor of this epic journey. We wish Howard, John and the rest of the team the very best of luck as they make final preparations for their adventure. And we can't wait to see the movie!
