Description
Mast hoops are commonly used on gaff-rigged sailing boats to allow the sail to slide up and down the mast. They are used in place of a sail track since this would foul the gaff yoke as it slides along the mast.
These authentic traditional bolted mast hoops have been hand-made by the same company for the past 50 years. Bent from straight & clear-grained oak timber, our mast hoops are available to suit a wide range of mast diameters.
Bolted with brass machine screw fasteners, these mast hoops can be fitted to masts without removing the rigging. Alternatively you can also purchase copper riveted mast hoops. Attach the sail using these bronze sail fasteners.
The hoops are finished with a mixture of pure linseed oil and gum turpentine.
Other sizes and shapes are available by special order, as is a leathering service.
Ordering mast hoops: The inside diameter of a mast hoop should be 25% larger than the mast at its widest point.

Removable Oak Mast Hoops 5" diameter
The four hoops I ordered arrived very quickly despite being sent from Australia to England. They were well packaged and thus arrived undamaged by the trip.
On removing the three bolts and the end screw from one of the hoops I was pleased to see that there was very little spring-back, something that did concern me when ordering them. The hoop opened up very slightly such that the outer end of the hoop moved about 10mm.
I slid the hoop down the mast from the top until it would go no further and then carefully wound the hoop past the hounds and the mast bands in a spiral fashion. This meant that the hoop was not put under too much strain.
Once past the obstructions that predicated the use of removable hoops I replaced the bolts and the small screw. The hoops look good and are well made, demonstrably, showing no signs of weak spots of cracks.

I expect that the hoops will last a long time but should they get damaged in use or by weathering, I know where to get replacements. -

The Mast Hoops are very well made and very easy to fit,i would give them 10 out of 10 first class.
